Southwest Oklahoma: May 23, 2024

Thursday’s storm chase went from 0-60 in a flash. The initial target area was somewhat unclear. Storms were possible anywhere from SW Kansas to NW Texas, so I split the difference and went to Seiling, OK. As isolated storms initiated in SW Oklahoma, I made a quick decision to blast south. 

Timing was just about right, as interactions between a cluster of storms led to an intense, tornadic supercell evolving. 

Road options were a bit limited to a bridge closure, but I was able to watch a tornado from a distance of maybe a mile away. The tornado changed shapes and sizes, even becoming multi-vortex for a time. 

It’s been a very active storm season so far  and it’s far from over…
